Overview - About Botswana
Capital: Gaborone
Independence: 30 September 1966
Main Tourist towns: Maun, Kasane
Population (at of 2011): 2 039 000
Currency: Pula (BWP), subdivided into 100 Thebe (In Setswana, Pula means Rain and Thebe means Shield)
Botswana compares in size to France or Texas (some 581 730 square kilometres; 224 548 square miles), and extends from the Chobe River in the North, to the Limpopo River in the East, with the vast Kalahari Desert forming the Western and Southern borders – making for some great choices for your Safari.
A Safari to Botswana allows you to enjoy a true, off the beaten track experience. Although Botswana is very much dominated by the extensive and varied Kalahari Desert, it is a surprisingly diverse country, with the Okavango Delta as the Jewel in its crown.
Your Safari should take in the Okavango - the world's largest inland Delta, which is also home to the famed Moremi Game Reserve. You might also wish to visit the vast Central Kalahari Game Reserve, and Chobe National Park - home to the Savute channel and, arguably, the greatest concentration of elephant on Africa's extensive continent.
Botswana's position also allows you to extend your safari arrangements to Victoria Falls, Hwange National Park and Livingstone. There is also easy access to Namibia’s Caprivi Strip (now renamed the Zambezi Region).

Access
For most Safaris to Botswana access is best via South Africa, then on to the Safari centre of Maun, gateway to the Okavango. From here you get to experience some excellent Safari offerings, with the opportunity to see some of Africa's most iconic wildlife.
However, there is also easy access to northern Botswana with direct flights to Kasane from Johannesburg, or you might choose to start in either Victoria Falls or Livingstone, both towns being a short hop to Kasane; gateway to the Chobe. There are also a limited number of flights between Cape Town and Maun (some direct, some go via Gaborone).
Your Safari options are surprisingly varied, as you might choose to fly, by light aircraft, between Lodges, or take a guided safari (camping or accommodated). Botswana accommodation is varied, from the traditional, but very comfortable, tented camp, to the height of luxury - but always with some excellent guiding available.
