Day 1 Northern Chobe
Arrive at Johannesburg International Airport where you will check in for your flight to Kasane Airport in Botswana. Here you will be met by a representative of Chobe Bakwena Lodge, for the transfer to the Lodge, just 20 minutes’ drive away.
Bakwena Lodge lies on the banks of the Chobe River, just 1.5km from the spot where Zambia, Zimbabwe, Namibia and Botswana converge.
Day 2 Northern Chobe
Activities at Bakwena Lodge mainly take the form of game drives and boat cruises, although these may be substituted for a guided bird walk at the Seboba Recreational Park, a Caracal World of Wildlife Centre visit, or Fishing (tackle included).
Chobe is home to Africa’s largest elephant population with a daily migration of these magnificent pachyderms from their foraging grounds in the Teak forests, to the mighty Chobe to quench their thirst.
Game Drives: Generally a three hour activity inside the Chobe National Park, early morning offers the best chance to spot some of the shyer big cats, however all times of the day offer unique experiences!
Boat Cruises: Definitely the most sedate method of game viewing. The Chobe River has one of the highest concentrations of bird species in the world, from the elusive Finfoot to the regal African Fish eagle.
Bird watching: By boat, on foot or from the comfort of your own deck; there is a wide variety of species to see including: trumpeter hornbills, crested barbets, weavers, Bishop birds, the pin tailed whydah, collared palm thrush and African fin foot.
Fishing: The Chobe and Zambezi river systems are home to arguably the best fighting fish in the world (pound for pound) – the mighty Tigerfish. The river systems are also home to a number of other worthy angling species, including catfish, pike and Tilapia species.
Guided Bicycle Tours & Village Walks: These are complimentary.
Day 3 Linyanti
After breakfast and a morning activity, you will be transferred back to Kasane Airport, where you will board a light aircraft for your flight into Linyanti airstrip. Linyanti Bush Camp is set on overlooking the Linyanti marshes, in a private concession which borders on the western edge of the Chobe enclave. The camp is therefore away from the main tourist routes.
Linyanti Bush Camp is a small and intimate property, accommodating only 12 guests, in well appointed tented accommodation, with en suite facilities. The bathroom sections have been upgraded and are now separated by a door from the bedroom area. All bathrooms now boast an option indoor/ outdoor feature, with views over the marsh.
Days 4 and 5 Linyanti
You get to explore the area on morning and afternoon game drives, as well as night drives, with spotlight, allowing you to see the nocturnally active species. In addition, there are guided walks, adding to the authentic safari experience that is part of the Linyanti Bush Camp experience.
The area is best known for its large populations of Elephant and buffalo that congregate in vast numbers especially during the dry season. As this is a diverse area, lion, sable, roan, leopard, wild dog, and a number of the plains game can be enjoyed. The rare and elusive sitatunga antelope, red lechwe, hippo and crocodile can be found in the
surrounding marshes.
Day 6 Okavango Delta
After a morning activity you will be chartered to Kadizora Camp, 25 minutes away.
The Okavango Delta represents one of the last truly unspoilt wilderness areas in Africa, and remains one of nature's marvels, characterised by the gentle flooding of endless plains.
The northern regions of the Delta feature larger expanses of savannahs punctuated by lagoons and tributaries, and it is on the banks of one of these that a magnificent site has been selected for Kadizora Camp. Set on the grassy wetlands of the remote Okavango, Kadizora Camp lies in a game-rich private concession. Such a location gives guests the opportunity to enjoy guided walking safaris as well as game viewing by 4X4. It’s also a place to sit back in a mokoro, the local canoe, and let the Okavango float by.
Days 7 and 8 Okavango Delta
Activities at Kadizora Camp include morning mekoro trips (dugout canoes) with island walks, and afternoon game drives. Fishing is offered on request and in season. Boat activities are also offered between April and October. There is the option to arrange a day trip to a traditional village. Visit the church, the clinic, local Primary school and meet family members of the camp staff.
A permanent life giving swamp, the Okavango Delta rises in the Angolan Highlands, and enters Botswana below Namibia’s Caprivi Strip region. It was once a part of Lake Makgadikgadi, but is now home to over 200 000 large mammals, many of which migrate during the summer rains and return during the cooler and dryer winter months.
This part of the Okavango Delta is home to mammals such as: lions, cheetahs, leopards, wild dog, elephants, buffalo, hippo, giraffe, hyena, zebra, kudu, impala and many more! This aquatic region is also home to various bird, insect, fish and plant species - making it a safari paradise.
This is the only area in the Okavango Delta to offer hot air ballooning.
Your Hot Air Balloon Safari begins with an early morning departure from Kadizora Camp, driving through the floodplains to the balloon launch site. On this pre-dawn safari, you may be fortunate enough to see sightings of nocturnal wildlife. On arrival at the launch site, you will be served tea or coffee, while the balloon is being rigged and inflated ready for your flight. After a welcome greeting by the pilot, you are ready for take-off. As the balloon is fired up, drift away across the flood plains, watch the sunrise and the animals waking to begin their day. Upon landing, celebrate your flight with champagne and snacks and receive your first flight certificate from the pilot before heading back to camp. Hot air ballooning is available on during the peak season from April – September.
Day 9 Khwai Area
After your morning activity and brunch, you will be chartered from Kadizora Camp to Khwai airstrip, 30 minutes away, where a representative of Khwai Bush Camp will meet you and transfer you to the Camp.
Khwai Bush Camp, located on a permanent site on the Tsaro Concession, is built on the banks of the Khwai River and nestled amongst a forest of sycamore and leadwood trees. The Camp consists of 4 standard and 2 family chalets. Guests enjoy spacious and comfortable thatched accommodation and private en-suite bathrooms with views over the permanent water source and beyond into the Moremi Game Reserve.
Days 10 and 11 Khwai Area
The area offers varied ecosystems- from enchanted forests and undulating grasslands to lush floodplains and meandering lagoons- this is one of the most consistent areas for wildlife encounters year-round.
Game Drives on the Khwai Community Concession - Twice Daily Game Drives are offered at Khwai Leadwood, Morning Game Drives and an Evening Game Drives.
Night Drives - Being located on a private concession, night drives are possible and are offered as an optional activity at Khwai.
Mokoro Safaris - Khwai Bush Camp is situated on a beautiful lagoon, therefore allowing breathtaking Mokoro experiences. This activity is seasonal (when water levels permit). A Mokoro is a traditional canoe which is normally made by digging out the trunk of a large tree. However to preserve the trees and national parks the Camp has moulded the Mokoros out of Fibreglass.
Walking - Guided walks are available which usually depart from the Camp after breakfast, the duration of the walk will depend solely on the group walking.
Bird Watching - The Bird life is phenomenal and the perfect place to view such a wide variety of species. From beginners to avid birders this is the place for you.
Sundowner Drinks - On the afternoon game drive just before sunset guests will stop at a secluded spot where the professional guide will stop the vehicle and unpack tables, drinks and snacks for guests to enjoy before departing on a night game drive.
Cultural Tours to Local Villages - The African Bush Camps Foundation is committed to empowering rural communities. They partner with communities on the outskirts of wildlife areas to become economically sustainable whilst ensuring that natural resources are protected and cared for. They also support local schools and run education programmes for children in communities. Take a cultural tour of the nearby villages to gain a deeper understanding of the country you are visiting and its people. As extraordinary as a safari is, these tours allows you to engage with Africa and its rich cultural heritage.
