Legendary Abu Camp lies within the huge 180,000 hectare (450,000 acre) private Abu Concession, the perfect location for the remarkable Abu Camp elephant herd. This Okavango concession includes a variety of habitats, plenty of water, and much natural foliage enabling the elephants to thrive.
Abu Camp's concession lies in the south-west of the Okavango, boasting seasonal floodplains, many channels and palm islands, along with a dry, wooded region to the west. The Camp itself is remote and stylish, offering its guests a haven of privacy, service and accommodation. Guests are accommodated in six canvas-styled en-suite rooms, all with huge decks, indoor and outdoor showers, a separate lounge area, and a certain air of elegance. Your room is connected to the main guest areas by well-lit pathways. Here you will find the lounge and dining area, a library, a communication area and a secluded swimming pool. For those seeking something truly unique, you have the opportunity of sleeping under the stars in the ‘Star Bed¸ a single accommodation unit, en-suite, which overlooks the elephant boma. After dinner, if you so wish, you will be escorted here, for a night with the elephants! Abu Camp offers the ultimate in Okavango activities: you walk with elephants, becoming part of the herd, experiencing their daily routines. Soon after your arrival at Abu Camp, you will be introduced to the herd, and each day during your stay, you will spend time with these beautiful creatures. Participate or just watch as they enjoy their mud baths, their training and their veterinary check-ups. Learn more about their conservation and behaviour. The Camp’s vision has always been to care for their abused or orphaned elephants and, where possible, to return elephants to the wild. The movements and behaviour of these reintroduced elephants are studied by scientists, which contributes to the understanding of the conservation issues that the species face. Since the inception of Abu Camp, nine elephants have been successfully introduced into the private Abu Concession. In addition to the elephant interaction activity, game drives in open safari vehicles are offered early morning and late afternoon. The Abu Camp Guides are highly trained and will make every drive a memorable one. |
