Kanana Camp is set on the banks of the Xudum River in the southwest of the Okavango Delta. The area encompasses a number of small islands, each of which are bedecked with palms, figs, ebony and knobthorn trees. The area is known for its exceptional birding, and also has a great diversity of mammals. At Kanana you are accommodated in a spacious, twin-bedded safari unit. Each of the 8 units is on a raised teak deck, which offers wonderful vistas of your surroundings. Dependent on the volume of the annual floods, the level of water transforms this normally dry camp into a wonderful water experience and in the early months of the year it sometimes possible to detect the water levels rising. All of the accommodation has en suite bathrooms with hot and cold running water, shower and flush toilet. The tents have been placed in such a way that you are given privacy, yet still within a comfortable distance from the central Lodge area. There is also a honeymoon tent. The main Camp area houses the lounge, bar and dining room, all of which overlook the River. At night there is a camp fire at the water’s edge, a great place to sit and relax. For relaxation, and some sun bathing, you can enjoy the use of a small swimming pool. There are a number of activities available at Kanana and the focus varies with the rising and falling levels of the Okavango Delta. A good way to get the know the area is on the morning and late afternoon (which continue into the evening), game drives. You can also explore the waterways by mekoro or powerboat, and enjoy the wonderful variety of birds, plant and reptile species found in the area. Kanana is well known its birds, and the area is home to a seasonal heronry that teems with activity from August through to the summer months. The area is also known for its sightings of the rare and beautiful Pel’s fishing owl. Guided walks are a highlight in this diverse area, and a great way to learn more about your surround. Kanana also offers fly or spin fishing for tilapia (bream), African pike and sharptooth catfish (there is a strict catch and release policy). |
