Eagle Island Lodge (previously known as Eagle Island Camp) is set on private Xaxaba Island, set in a maze of waterways and lush vegetation. The Boro River forms a lagoon in front of Camp, which attracts both game and birds, making for excellent sightings from your private veranda.
Accommodation is in 12 large, deluxe, tented rooms, each of which is beautifully appointed and is equipped with oversized beds, with views over the water; air-conditioning, mosquito net, min-bar, and safe. You can also enjoy the large outdoor deck with excellent view, private plunge pools, indoor & outdoor showers, a reading nook and walk-in wardrobes. The tents are all set on raised wooden platforms, and are shaded by a traditional African thatch roof. The public areas include a stylish dining area complete with pizza oven, a lounge area with an artisan-style bar, a library, a campfire area and the Fish Eagle Bar which is located directly on the water. Local artisans and materials were used throughout these areas. Eagle Island Lodge offers a variety of activities with which to explore the area, and enjoy game viewing. Early morning game drives take you out and amongst the wildlife, whilst passing through a range of different habitats. There is a chance of seeing big cats, hippo, giraffe and crocodiles. Just as atmospheric are evening drives. Finish your day as the sun sinks down beyond a glassy lagoon, and you enjoy a sun downer! A mokoro excursion is not to be missed at Eagle Island - sit back, and enjoy an new and different perspective. This is perhaps the best, and most tranquil, way to enjoy the Okavango. A Walking safari is easily combined with a mekoro excursion. Here you have the chance to see wildlife and the environment up close – it may be an insect, tracks, or swarming termite mounds. These small, unexpected aspects of life often make the biggest impression. There is nothing quite like being able to touch, hear, smell and even taste nature all around. Birding too, is excellent, from stately egrets, storks and cormorants, to the fish eagles that swoop overhead. You might also like to try a helicopter excursion – a way to experience the Okavango like no other. You can get to hover just a few feet over great herds of zebra as they continue to graze, completely unconcerned, you may also be able to touch down on an island far away from human habitation. |
