Day 1 Johannesburg/ Okavango Delta
Arrive at Johannesburg International Airport, where you will be met and assisted with check in formalities for your flight to Maun Airport in Botswana. Having cleared customs and collected your luggage in Maun, a light aircraft representative will meet you in the Arrivals Hall, and will escort you to the aircraft for your flight into Gunn’s Camp, 20 minutes away, across the Okavango Delta.
The Okavango is an immense river that never meets the sea. Instead, its crystal clear waters spread across the Kalahari Desert, forming Africa 's largest wetland wonder, before the formidable African sun swallows the last of its outstretched fingers. The Delta is an abundant oasis amid the vast plains and pans of the desert that covers most of Southern Africa . Its waterways are a mesh of meandering and intercepting channels, creating a haven for Africa 's most celebrated wildlife.
Overlooking the legendary Chiefs Island and bordering the Moremi Game Reserve, Gunns Camp is one of the last few remaining luxury vintage safari camps, set under leafy palms and African Ebony to blend naturally with its unique surroundings.
At the airstrip you will be met by the Camp Managers, and taken to the elevated main lodge area for a welcoming refreshment, and then shown to your en-suite spacious tented accommodation. At Gunns Camp there is a fine balance of comfort without isolating one's self from the sights and sounds of nature.
Day 2 Okavango Delta
The main activities are mokoro (traditional dugout canoes), powerboat excursions, and guided game walks with experienced guides who have spent their lives accumulating knowledge and understanding of the complex ecosystem of the Okavango Delta. As they show you how to silently observe nature with minimal impact you will begin to realize the privilege and quiet excitement of being in one of those places that makes memories for you.
Another great way to explore the crystal clear channels of the Boro River is by motor-boat. Watch the sun set whilst drifting along a lagoon and sipping sundowners. For the adventurous, they also offer a rustic island camping experience.
Chiefs Island where your activities take place offers one the of largest populations of African wildlife in the Delta area. Sightings may include lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and packs of wild dog running across the plains of the Delta. The concession is also home to hippo , crocodiles , plains zebra and a variety of buck, including the red lechwe.
Gunns Camp is renowned for being a birder's paradise, with over 240 species of bird including the rare Pels Fishing Owl and the endangered Wattled Crane.
In the evenings you can relax in the elevated main lodge, or lie in the swimming pool sipping your drink watching the majesty of the African sunset, whilst reflecting on your day with fellow guests.
Day 3 Okavango
After an early morning activity and brunch, your pilot will collect you from Gunn's Camp, transferring you to Mma Dinare (Mother Buffalo) Camp, 20 minutes away, across the Okavango Delta. The Camp lies approximately 45 minutes away from the Santawani airstrip.
Located in south-eastern Okavango Delta, Mma Dinare lies in a private 272 km2 concession, adjacent to the Moremi Game Reserve. It overlooks the Gomoti River and its flood plains and the Camp has been designed to embrace the natural surroundings. 100% Eco-friendly, the Camp features the latest in solar and waste technology.
Day 4 Okavango
Activities at Mma Dinare include day and night game drives within the private concession adjacent to Moremi Game Reserve. These are on and off road safaris, with six people per vehicle, a guide and a tracker (at night). Mma Dinare also offers seasonal water activities on the Gomoti river and game walks available depending on local conditions.
Since this area normally receives floods last, it includes some of the closest dry-season watering points for the game that spreads out towards Nxai and Makgadikgadi Pans during the rains. Around this time, there is a high density of game in the dry season but since quite a lot of the reserve is mopane woodlands (a favourite location for animals during the rains and early dry season) good game viewing is expected all year round. This river system attracts a wide variety of game, including Elephant, Buffalo, Giraffe, Kudu, Impala, Tsessebe, Hippo, Crocodile, Genet, Honey Badger and a host of Plains Game. Rare Antelope breeds including Roan, Sable and Eland, not normally seen in the Okavango region, occur here too. As the Gomoti is the main water source in the area, Lion, Leopard, Cheetah and Wild Dog come down to the riverside to drink and hunt. The location and views are spectacular with the classic flooding of the Okavango across the adjacent seasonal floodplains. For those keen on bird-watching, the combination of the wetlands and the drier Acacia and Mopane veldt provide a perfect habitat for a variety of aquatic species including Open Billed Storks, Hammerkops, Egrets, Ibis and forest/savannah dwellers including Raptors, Shrikes, Drongos, Sunbirds, Ground Hornbills and more.
Day 5 Maun Airport
After a morning activity and brunch, you will be chartered back to Maun Airport (20 minutes), in time to check in for your flight back to Johannesburg International Airport.
