Jao Camp is situated on a large secluded island in a private concession bordering the Moremi Game Reserve, Okavango Delta.
As Jao Camp has a variety of habitats, from lagoons to waterways to dry grasslands and open floodplains, the camp is able to offer its guests both land and water game viewing experiences. Water levels do fluctuate, depending on the time of year. Central in the concession, there are huge open floodplains, and Jao lies to the southern side of these plains, an area fringed with riverine forests. Accommodation at Jao Camp comprises nine large and beautiful canvas and thatched rooms, all offering en-suite facilities, outdoor showers, private salas and decks with amazing bush views. The main area has a lounge and dining area and two plunge pools. Jao also has a Spa. Activities at Jao include mekoro, boat trips, fishing, day and night game drives and birding. There are two platform hides in the concession. During an unusually high flood season, game drives may begin by boating guests to nearby Hunda Island where the vehicles are waiting. Huge herds of red lechwe can be seen, followed by their relentless predator - lion. Other game regularly spotted is elephant, buffalo, leopard, tsessebe, zebra and wildebeest, hippo and crocodile. Many bird species are resident including Meyer's Parrot, African Harrier Hawk, Black egret, Coppery-tailed Coucal, Malachite Kingfisher, Hamerkop and Black Crake. |
