Skybeds, a new and unique Botswana offering, is set in the Khwai Private Reserve, which borders the Moremi Game Reserve. The reserve is at the north east corner of the Delta, and is home to a diverse landscape, as it encapsulations land and water which support a number of ecosystems. This leads to an exciting array of wildlife.
As you can imagine, this is no ordinary Lodge. Skybeds takes a maximum of 6 guests and your accommodation is in a three storey raised platform – which overlooks a waterhole and the extensive plains for which Khwai is known. The Camp effortlessly combines style and rustic charm. You en suite bathroom in on the first floor (complete with flushing loo), on the second floor is a dressing area, and the ‘’pent house” is home to a large double bed (twin beds can be accommodated), complete with feather duvet and mosquito net. At some 5 metres high, this offers spectacular views of the both the surrounds and the sky. With the night sky as you ceiling, you might be forgiven for not being too aware of what is going on around you – and as the Skybeds overlook a busy waterhole, it is very possible to see wild dog, lion, elephant and hyena (in one night). As all of the Skybeds overlook a permanent waterhole (the only permanent water source for 50,000 acres), wildlife can be prolific, and it is not unusual to see a herd of 400 bull elephants, along with lion, leopard, eland, zebra, and other plains game. Whilst the tree-house is your unique and private sanctuary, the rest of the camp is of a more traditional arrangement. At Skybeds, good, wholesome food is served around the campfire, with a back-drop of wandering wildlife, and the sounds of nature. At most Lodges, your time away from game viewing is used for rest and relaxation… but at Skybeds, your ‘’bedroom’’ is the best place from which to seem wildlife. You can enjoy morning and afternoon game drives, and these tend to focus on the resident predators – species for which the area is well known. Game walks are also on offer – a wonderful way of getting to know nature, and allowing for some excellent antelope sightings, amongst others. Although Skybeds is clearly a romantic spot, it is available for small groups/ families (children of 12 and older). |
