Macatoo Camp is set on an island surrounded by plains, interspersed with by watery meadows, and the Delta's seasonal lagoons. Although the Camp is best known as the African Horseback safaris property, non-riding guests can also enjoy safaris here - with a variety of options, from 3 to 10 nights.
You are accommodated in a large, classic Safari tent, each with its own en-suite shower and toilet. As there are only 6 tents, the camps is personalised. The Main Camp area is home to a large mess tent, with an adjacent private pool. On the longer safaris, you have the chance to experience the enjoyment of riding out to a mobile fly-camp. The riding terrain is scenically varied. For most guests the main attraction is in riding good horses in a unique and beautiful area. The wildlife is both varied and abundant, and the riding can be varied, from walking quietly whilst following big game and admiring the bird life, to cantering through the meadows along with the giraffe and lechwe. Macatoo is a specialist camp, and therefore riding ability is important. 4 to 6 hours a day is spent in the saddle. Riders do need to feel competent about keeping up with the group, capable of riding at all paces, rising to the trot and controlling your horse at a canter. You may be required to gallop out of trouble, which means that beginners are not catered for. It will be at the discretion of African Horseback whether you will be permitted to ride, as safety, and enjoyment of individuals, and the group, is paramount. For safety reasons, there is a lower age limit of 16 years for riders, and anyone over 60 years will been to be riding fit, and strong. There is also a strictly enforced weight limit for riders, of 210 lb/ 95 kg. Apart from the thrilling horseback safaris, guests can also enjoy game viewing by vehicle. Night drives are popular and a great way of seeing the local night life. When the water levels are high enough, you can also go out in small boats, allowing for a new perspective on game viewing. Macatoo Camp also offers its guests birding walks, canoeing, and fishing. |
