Camp Xakanaxa is situated inside the Moremi Game Reserve, Okavango Delta, and a 25 minute flight from Maun Airport. It is one of a handful of Okavango lodges which can offer its guests comprehensive year-round boating and mokoro trips as well as long nature drives through abundant game country. To the north and west of the camp are the permanent lagoons and waterways of the Okavango and to the south and east are the dry woodlands.
Camp Xakanaxa was one of the first camps built in Botswana, and the private owner has gone the extra mile to maintain an authentic African bush camp feel to the Camp, without omitting the luxuries and comforts guests appreciate. The Camp nestles on the banks of the Khwai River, on the Xakanaxa Lagoon, and has thirteen luxury en-suite safari tents, all built on wooden platforms, beautifully furnished, with views across the channels from their private viewing decks. The main camp areas include a lounge and dining area, a swimming pool with sala, and a unique fire pit built on stilts across the River. There is a large reception area and a curio shop. Xakanaxa operates on generator power but at night all lighting is supplied by battery powered lamps, candles and paraffin lanterns, giving the camp an authentic African ambience. Activities at Camp Xakanaxa include day drives, motorised boating and short mokoro excursions. As the camp lies within the Moremi Reserve, off road drives, night drives, walks and fishing are not permitted. The Moremi Game Reserve is known as one of Africa’s very best game-viewing areas, home to abundant herds of Elephant, Sable, Giraffe, Tsessebe, Lechwe, Wildebeest, Kudu, and Impala. Lion, Leopard, Cheetah, Wild dog and Hyena complete the picture. Buffalo, Hippo, Crocodile, Red Lechwe, Waterbuck and Sitatunga antelope are some of the water-adapted species to be seen at Xakanaxa. Birding is spectacular, especially during the spring and summer months, with 550 species recorded here. Huge numbers of breeding storks and herons are attracted to the world-famous heronries which lie just to the north of the camp. |
