Pom Pom lies in the heart of the Okavango Delta, and has just completed many upgrades. Pom Pom’s concession lies to the west of the Moremi Game Reserve, on the head waters of the Xudum River system.
This Botswana camp is built on a large lagoon, filled with hippo, and is a 20 minute flight away from Maun. The scenery is pure Okavango – palm fringed islands, channels and floodplains. Pom Pom is a camp for the safari traditionalist – 9 extra large Meru style tents raised on wooden platforms, with en-suite facilities and private lounges, ceiling fans, a private verandah and an outdoor shower, all overlooking the lagoon in front of the camp. The dining room, bar and swimming pool areas have been refurbished too, and yet the old-style safari hospitality remains firmly intact. The beauty of Pom Pom Camp is that all activities are offered all year round. These include mokoro outings, game walks, game drives both off road and at night, motor boat cruises and fishing. At Pom Pom great game viewing is a high priority, but the nature experience ranks a close second. Birding here is legendary, with countless sightings reported. From the Pied King Fisher, to the African jacana, to the Giant Eagle Owls and Pel’s Fishing Owl – all are regularly spotted. Pom Pom camp is an Okavango gem, with hippos grunting in the camp’s permanent lagoon, surrounded by acres of reeds. In this water oasis, a mokoro safari offers you a wonderful way of viewing wildlife as you glide between the islands. Morning and evening game drives are the order of the day, culminating in a night safari as you return to camp. Fishing is also possible at Pom Pom and the guides will be happy to take you to their secret spots to try for Pike, Tigerfish and a variety of Bream species. A guided bush walk will introduce a whole new dimension of the Delta to you – you will learn about the ecology and flora of the region. All the big predators, Buffalo, Giraffe, Zebra, and Wildebeest can be viewed and if you are fortunate, some of the nocturnal animals such as Serval, Civet and Genet may be seen on night drives. Hippo and Crocodile are found in the deeper lagoons in the area. Baboon, Black-Backed Jackal, Cheetah, Dwarf Mongoose, Elephant, Giraffe, Hippo, Honey Badger, Hyena, Impala, Lechwe, Leopard, Lion, Monkey, Pangolin, Porcupine, Side-Striped Jackal, Spotted-Necked Otter, Tsessebe, Warthog, Wild Dog, Wildebeest, and Zebra are regularly sighted. |
