Day 1 Maun/ Moremi area
From Johannesburg International Airport, fly to Maun Airport in Botswana, where you will be met and road transferred to Tusker’s Bush Camp, approximately 1.5 – 2 hours’ drive away. The distance is +/- 73km and the Camp is located in a vast 365 000 hectare private concession.
Tuskers Bush Camp lies between Nxai Pan National Park in the east and Moremi Game Reserve in the west. It encompasses a private concession of mopane forest and scrub, plus the northern tip of the Botswana Kalahari, making this exclusive tract of land ideal for game drives and walking safaris.
Day 2 Moremi area
An early wake up call will be met with coffee and rusks at the main area of Camp before you depart on a morning game drive or optional bush walk through the pristine Tuskers concession. A guided walking safari through this exclusive region will bring you closer to the details of nature, while you might be lucky enough to encounter big game on foot.
The general sequence of a day at Tusker’s Bush Camp:
After your morning activity and breakfast, you will fly to Xakanaxa airstrip, where you will be met and transferred to Xobega Island Camp.
Xobega Island Camp is set on a private island in the Okavango, adjacent to the renowned Moremi Game Reserve. Xobega (or Gcobega) Island is ideally located and easily accessible for 4 x 4 self-drivers, and also for guests flying into the nearby Xakanaxa airstrip.
You arrive at the tree-filled island via boat from the Mboma or Xakanaxa boat stations. Hippos rule the waters around the island, lions are heard across the water, and a Pel’s fishing owl takes up residence in the trees.
Accommodation at Xobega is in 10 light en suite Meru-style canvas tents, each equipped with twin beds. The bathroom is open-air and is accessed via a zip-doorway from the tent. Everything about this camp is eco-friendly, from the sole use of solar-power, to bucket showers, and chemical toilets. Basic, but beautiful, and designed for safari enthusiasts. The tents are situated short distances from the main area of the camp, and pathways lead between the vegetation.
Day 4 Xobega
Boating is the main game viewing method, as there are no game drives on the island; however, short, guided bush walks can be arranged upon request. Morning and afternoon boat cruises take you exploring the Delta. Bird watching is excellent, whether by boat or at the Camp itself.
Enjoy icy refreshments at the most beautiful time of day as the boating safari continues, or a stop off at an island for sundowners.
Mokoro safaris are optional and can be taken from Mboma boat station on transfers in and out of Xobega Island.
Day 5 Okavango Delta
Today you fly from Xakanaxa airstrip to Jumbo Junction Boat Station, approximately 5-6 hours via game drive roads. Here you will board a boat to Xobega Island Camp.
Jumbo Junction is a new addition to the northern Okavango Delta. This interesting Camp is uniquely set at the junction of 2 historic Elephant corridors. This area of the Delta arguably offers some of the best wildlife viewing in the Okavango. An added bonus in this area is the year-round combination of water- and land based activities. This is because the Jumbo Junction is set near some of the permanent deep channels close to the Pan-handle area that, in turn, feed the rest of the Delta.
Accommodation at Jumbo Junction is split between 2 Chalets and 6 Tents. All accommodation is en suite and is positioned along the water front, but set back under the trees – thus allowing a view, and privacy.
The 6 Classic tents all have twin beds, and the bathrooms have twin basins and showers, with a private toilet. The tents are the traditional Meru style, and offer a very comfortable stay. Plug points allow you to charge your phone, camera, and tablet.
Day 6 & 7 Okavango Delta
Early wakeup call followed by coffee and breakfast in the dining tent.
Boating through the channels provides access to the areas of the concession for game viewing during the wet season or just to enjoy the scenery in general. This is also a great way to see the birds of the area – which, in season, includes many migrants.
You might also wish to go out on a guided nature walk – a great way to explore the area. These walks are leisurely and you get to learn some of the details of this fascinating environment. Such walks are dependent on the weather levels and the terrain at the time.
Guests also enjoy game drives in the area, which allows you travel further and get to see a great variety of game. The game drives are offered in the morning and later afternoon (which includes the sunset drinks – always a great way to finish off the day).
For those who enjoying fishing, the Okavango Delta provides some great catches between the months of March and September. Try your hand at fishing for Tilapea from a mokoro, or fly fishing for African Pike.
You might also wish to visit to the local village, which allows you the opportunity to experience the cultural richness of the communities living in the Okavango Delta. Experience daily life, from baking, tool making, fishing, the school and farming.
Guests can also enjoy the rare opportunity to experience the cultural richness of the “Bukakhwe” San Bushmen, visiting from the nearby Gudigwa Village.
Day 8 Maun Airport
Today you will be transferred to Jumbo Junction Airstrip for your 25-minute light aircraft charter flight back to Maun Airport, in time to check in for your return scheduled flight to Johannesburg International Airport.
