Linyanti - introduction
The Linyanti region borders part of Namibia's Caprivi Strip (now renamed the Zambezi Region), and is also a miniature Delta/ marsh, in terms of the water ways, vegetation, and wildlife. Part of the Linyanti area, is actually part of the Chobe National Park, and tends to be less frequented than other areas. It also allows visitors more of an off the beaten track experience, and is well-worth adding to your Botswana Safari.
To the west of the Linyanti Reserve area, is the Selinda Reserve. On the Northern bank of the Kwando River, is Namibia. The first section of the Chobe River is called the Kwando but after entering Botswana (its origin is in Angola) it becomes the Linyanti. At Parakurungu it changes names again to become the Itenge and only near Ngoma Gate (the Botswana/ Namibia border) does it become the Chobe River. From the point where the river abruptly bends, the Magwegqana or Selinda spillway links the Okavango Delta to the Linyanti.
The Linyanti area is home to some vast private concessions, such as Selinda, and some exceptional wildlife viewing, and good concentrations of lion, leopard, wild dog, antelope, hippo and elephant.
The Linyanti has high wildlife concentrations in winter, in particular, as elephants concentrate in great numbers at the rivers and waterholes. Thousands of zebra spend the winter in the Linyanti before heading south to Savute in November in expectation of summer rains and good grazing.
