There have been some excellent Wild Dog sightings the last few weeks on Bushways Safaris. These animals are one of the most fascinating predators to observe in Botswana. Lycaon pictus, more commonly known as the African Wild Dog, are highly social animals, with the female and males having separate dominance hierarchies and social structures. Different to other predators, it is the female Wild Dog who leaves the pack once sexually matured, rather than the male.They live in dens in the sands of the Moremi Game Reserve and Chobe National park, and are often seen chasing their prey across the plains or socialising with each other and playing with their young.
Sadly, these beautiful animals are highly endangered as other predators, habitat loss, human involvement and prosecution and disease are driving them to near extinction. They were once found in almost 40 countries, but are now found in just 4, with Moremi Game Reserve having almost 200. It is estimated that there are only around 3000 - 5000 Wild Dogs left in the wild.
With the help of conversation efforts and a better understanding of these amazing animals, it is hoped they will be around for many more generations to come.
