Abu Camp is proud to announce that as of 31 December 2016, the Camp’s holistic elephant experience will no longer include elephant rides and instead focus on the immersive walking-based elephant experience for which Abu is already well known.
The enhanced Abu elephant programme focuses on the full elephant conservation experience, and offers guests and families the unique opportunity to spend time with members of the Abu Herd, walking with them through the bush, observing them up close in the wild and getting to know their individual characters, whilst learning more about the importance of conservation from local guides and researchers. Abu received worldwide recognition for its innovative work with orphaned and rejected elephants who have come together to form the Abu Herd. This combination of personalities, from matriarch Cathy to naughty youngest, Naledi, forms the heart of the interactive elephant experience, where guests meet, walk and intermingle with the animals. Abu remains committed to being a place that first and foremost concentrates on the broader and more meaningful element of elephant conservation and involves its guests in these efforts. Eagle Island Lodge, in the Okavango, has introduced the first 'helicopter and horseback safari'. Combining an aerial safari by private helicopter with a horse-ride through one of the world’s last true remaining wildernesses, this excursion offers a new and exciting way to explore this world heritage site.
This unique sky and earth safari begins at dawn as the open-sided helicopter safari takes flight offering uninterrupted aerial views across the Delta. Guests can enjoy aerial views of the game rich landscape, with the chance of seeing elephant, buffalo, giraffe and zebra as the sun rises and the wildlife begins a new day. Following the helicopter flight, the safari continues on horse-back accompanied by a specialised guide who will give a safety briefing before leading a trail through the bush, traversing palm-lined islands, grassy flood plains, mopane forests and clear streams. (Riding level has to be proficient) Botswana's late rains have not disappointed, and the Makgadikgadi is once again transformed and teeming with new life. The water should remain for several weeks, which may delay the start of the quad bike excursions - usually commencing on 16 April.
However, there are heaps of babies to be seen - meerkats, zebras, wildebeest.... Kubu Quad Bike Expedition operates from 1 June to 30 September 2016, from Jack’s Camp, San Camp and Camp Kalahari (weather permitting), as you set off on your quad to The Lost Island of Baobabs. This spectacular journey in the heart of The Makgadikgadi Salt Pans is completely extraordinary. There is also a new policy regarding the minimum number of Guests required in order to operate the Kubu Quad Bike Expedition. It will now operate with a minimum of 2 Guests at the nightly rate of the chosen camp plus an additional supplement for the 2 nights when we are fly camping at The Lost Island of Baobabs. Hot-air balloon safaris are being introduced at both Vumbura Plains and Little Vumbura camps in the Okavango Delta from April 18 until the end of September, in order to coincide with Botswana's dry season.
Each balloon trip will be 45 minutes, accommodating a maximum of four guests. Upon landing, guests will be met with champagne before returning to camp for brunch. To complement the balloon safari, guests can either opt to be transferred to and from the launch site by helicopter or as part of the daily game drive. |
